Chapter 1

Ellis woke up. Someone was touching him. He felt really sore and tired. He opened his eyes a tad and saw a man hovering
over him with his hands in Ellis' pants pockets. "Ah!" Ellis exclaimed, shoving the man. "JESUS CHRIST!" The stranger yelled, punching Ellis in the face out of reflex. Ellis' face hit the carpet he was laying on, and his hand flew to his now aching face.

"What the hell, man?" Ellis said, scooting away with his elbows, still laying on the floor. "You're.. You're alive? Are you bitten?" The man asked. Ellis looked at his attacker. "What in the hell are yew talkin' bout, 'bitten'? Bitten by what? And why did ya hit me?" Ellis asked, gently rubbing his cheek. "You know what I mean! Don't you?" The stranger replied. "Yeah, yeah I just wanted tah make sure yew knew what ya meant." Ellis said sarcastically. "Nah man, I have no idea what ya mean. And who are yew?" He added.

"Shit, how long have you been out? It started two days ago." The man said, looking at Ellis confused. "WHAT started? Man, are yew on drugs? What are ya doin' in mah hotel room? And I asked who ya were." Ellis said, sitting up now. "Damn. Well two days ago some sort of infection started. This group called 'Umbrella' accidentally let out some biochemical weapon, and it's changing people. Into killers. And it doesn't matter who I am, I don't plan on sticking around." The man said. "I know, this probably sounds crazy but get your ass off the floor and look outside if you think I'm lying or on drugs." The man said after Ellis just looked at him like he was insane.

Ellis got to his feet and glanced out the hotel window. He saw a lot of fires, and on the ground he could make out a man lunging at another man, and Ellis heard a terrible scream and saw red on the ground where the two men were. "Oh shit, man.." Ellis could hardly believe what he saw. He turned to the stranger. "Why was yur hands in mah pockets?" Ellis questioned him.

"Everything has gone to Hell, kid. I don't even think there are laws anymore. People are running around getting supplies, taking anything. I figure if this is gunna last a few weeks or months before it gets sorted out, I should try to find stuff to help me survive. And I thought you were dead. Then you suddenly got up, and that's what people are doing. Getting up after dying and killing people. So, I thought you were.. one of them. And I asked if you were bitten cause that's how you become one of them. So... you don't have any bite marks, do you?" The man asked. Ellis thought he must be dreaming. Having a nightmare, rather. One moment he was in his hotel room.. doing.. something, for some reason he couldn't remember.. and the next he was waking up to this.

But he humored the man and began checking his body for anything off. He was fine. "Nah man, nothin'. So, what, should we do?" Ellis asked. "Nope. I don't do pairs or groups. I'm pretty solitary, and I'd prefer to go through this whole shit storm alone. But I'm sure you can find people to go along with, hell, there's a couple people in this hotel still I saw." Just as the man finished his sentence, there was an explosion somewhere in the hotel. "That doesn't sound good. Better get going. Good luck to ya, kid." The man said as he started to leave the room. "But I don't-" Ellis stopped himself when the man had just left the room and got ran into by a large black man.

"Shit!" both men exclaimed. "Didn't see you there." The black man said as he stepped back. "Watch the fuck out!" The other man said. "Hey, it was an accident, calm down." The black man said. The stranger who had woken Ellis started to walk away, but the black man stopped him. "Hey, where you goin'? The helicopter is on the roof." He said. "What? What helicopter?" The man replied. "To be evacuated. This place is done for, too many of those things. They're taking survivors out." Said the black man. "Really? Well, alright then. Guess I'll head there." The stranger said, jogging away in the direction of the roof.

The black man noticed Ellis for the first time. "Oh! Hey there kid, what's your name?" He asked. "Name's Ellis, you?" He replied. "Coach. Do you know that guy?" Coach asked. "Nope. He just woke meh up. I guess I've been out fer awhile; I just learned of the.. things that been happenin'." Ellis said. "Seriously?! That's some crazy shit. How come you were out for so long?" Coach asked. "I.. I dunno.. I can't remember anythin' past checking in tah this hotel room.." Ellis said, trying to recall the events. "Damn. Well let's get to the helicopter, huh Ellis?" Coach suggested. "Yeah, sounds good." He replied with a small smile. He was still extremely confused as to what had happened and why he woke up on the floor, not remembering anything, but he figured it was a dream so he might as well go along with it. The two headed for the roof. "Hey, did you noticed that guy was wearing a suit?" Coach asked, referring to the man who had woken Ellis up by accident. "Yeah, strange."

They turned down a hallway when they heard a woman scream nearby. They both turned in the direction it came from. Another scream was heard, along with the word 'help'. "Shit, think we should check it out?" Coach asked. "Yeah, she sounds like she's in trouble!" Ellis said, appalled Coach would even ask if they should help some girl screaming. "Okay, okay." Coach replied, putting his ear to a door he thought  the sound came from. "Hello?!" He yelled. "Please help!" She called. Coach opened the door and saw a broken window. "Hello!" The women yelled again. It seemed to come from out the window. The two men rushed over and looked down. A women was holding on to the ledge outside the window. "Please help!" She screamed. Coach bent down and grabbed her wrists. He pulled her up and Ellis helped her steady herself when she got up. She threw her arms around the two men. "Thank you so much! I think I would have fallen if not for you guys." She said, letting them go, wiping some tears. "Hey hey, you're alright. What's your name girl?" Coach said, trying to relax her. "Rochelle. How about you guys?" She asked. "My name's Coach, and this here is Ellis. We're headed to the helicopter on the roof. Want to come with us?" Coach offered. "Yeah, yeah sure." She said.

They all left the room and started toward the roof. They turned a corner and saw the suited man from before ramming into a door. "Hello there again, sir." Ellis said. The man turned and sighed at the sight. "Doors jammed." The man said. "Well, lets see what we can do about that." Coach said. "Back up." He ordered the suited man. The man scowled and moved. "Ellis, on three, okay?" Coach said, looking from Ellis to the door and back. "Alright." Ellis replied, seeing his plan. "One, two, three." Both men charged the door with their shoulders and hit it with great force. They broke a large hole in the door, Ellis falling threw it. "You alright kid?" Coach said, stepping through the hole. "Ya. Fine." Ellis said, getting up.

"C'mon you two." Coach said, looking back at Rochelle and the man. They had broke through to the stairs to the roof. All four started walking up the stairs. They went up a few flights when Coach asked "Hey, mister. What's your name?" he directed to the suited man, out of breath. "It's Nick." He replied blankly. "I'm Coach, the girl is Rochelle and the kid is Ellis." Coach said between breaths. "Who the hell.. Puts an E-Vac Station.. up thirty flights of goddamn stairs." He said, stopping for a breath. "Hey Coach, maybe the helicopter.. Maybe it's made of chocolate. Haha." Nick said, amusing himself. Coach glared at him. They jogged the rest of the stairs in silence, hearing the helicopter as they got closer. "Almost there!" Rochelle said. They got to the door and walked onto the roof, only to see a helicopter leaving. "Come back! Come back! Aw, he ain't comin' back." Coach said. "Aren't they supposed to be savin' our asses?" He added. "Guess there's been a change of plans." Nick said.
